Spooky Spider's Web Egg for Halloween

Spooky Spider’s Web Eggs

These hard-boiled eggs with a spooky web pattern are a deliciously creepy addition to any Halloween party buffet. Making them is a fun activity to get the kids involved with too. For the best results, try using food colour paste rather than liquid.

Cook: 12 mins | Dying time: 3hrs

Serves 6 people

Ingredients

  • 6 large FREE eggs
  • Food colouring (we found purple and red worked best)

Method

  1. Carefully place the eggs in a pan of water and bring to the boil. Once boiling, gently simmer for 10 - 12 minutes to achieve a hard-boil.
  2. Drain the eggs and submerge in ice-cold water until completely cooled. Take a dessert spoon and use the back to tap the shells all over to crack the surface. This will become the spiderweb pattern, so do this as artistically as possible!
  3. In a sealable sandwich bag add your desired food colouring before pouring in 200ml cold water, allowing the food colouring to dissolve into the water. Carefully place the cracked eggs in the solution and seal the bag.
  4. Allow the eggs to sit in the dye for at least 3 hours, ensuring the eggs are submerged in the liquid. Hang the bags on a washing line using pegs, making sure they’re secured.
  5. After at least 3 hours, carefully remove the eggs from the dye and discard the solution – you may want to wear gloves at this stage. Carefully peel the shells off the eggs to reveal the spider web pattern on the whites of the eggs.
  6. Slice the eggs in half and place them on serving plate or keep them whole for the best effect.
